Medicare Enrollment & Supplement Guidance
National Benefits Consultants helps Medicare-eligible individuals understand Medicare enrollment, compare Medicare Supplement options, and choose coverage that fits their needs.
Understanding Medicare Supplement Insurance
Medicare Supplement Insurance, also called Medigap, helps pay some of the out-of-pocket costs that Original Medicare does not cover, such as certain deductibles, coinsurance, and copayments. In general, you must have Medicare Part A and Part B to buy a Medigap policy. Medicare also explains that Medigap is extra insurance sold by private companies to help pay your share of costs in Original Medicare.
What Medigap Can Help With
Depending on the plan you choose, Medigap may help cover certain out-of-pocket costs that Original Medicare does not pay, such as:
- copayments
- coinsurance
- deductibles
- skilled nursing facility coinsurance
- blood
- certain foreign travel emergency benefits
important things to know
- In most cases, you can use any doctor or hospital that takes Medicare anywhere in the U.S.
- Some Medigap policies called Medicare SELECT may require you to use hospitals and, in some cases, doctors in a network for full benefits.
- Medigap plans sold after 2005 do not include prescription drug coverage. If you want drug coverage, you may need a separate Medicare Part D plan.
- Medigap generally does not cover long-term care, routine vision, dental, hearing aids, glasses, private-duty nursing, or prescription drugs.
when timing matters
Federal law gives many people a 6-month Medigap Open Enrollment Period. It starts the first month you have Medicare Part B and you are 65 or older. During this period, you generally have the strongest protections for buying a Medigap policy. Outside that window, switching or buying coverage can be more limited in many situations.
